Background

Mobilising for Rights Associates or MRA – “woman” in Arabic – is an international non-profit organization based in Rabat and working across the Maghreb.

Our mission is to contribute to changes in four domains – legal, structural, cultural and relational – to promote women’s human rights. We work for grassroots micro-level changes in behaviors and practices to support our activism for macro level reform initiatives. Our multidimensional strategies are designed for various layers of sustainable transformation for women.

We collaborate primarily with youth-led NGOs, lawyers and other activists located in a diversity of sites across the country outside of the traditional capitals. In efforts to decentralize and horizontalize the women’s movement, we support groups working in underserved areas including shantytowns, rural villages and popular urban neighborhoods, with both Arabic and Amazigh speaking communities.

Our deliberately small size allows us to focus on the quality of our programs and relationships. By taking an artisanal approach to our work, we are able to be creative, innovative, flexible, and responsive. We place a priority on operationalizing our values in our daily practices through a non-hierarchical structure, decision-making by consensus, and equitable financial practices. Our minimal institutionalization ensures efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

MRA currently implements programs in Morocco and Tunisia, with previous projects in Algeria and Libya, as well as collaborations in Egypt, Afghanistan, India, Malaysia, Yemen, Jordan, and Iraq.

MRA is legally registered in Le Mans, France since 2013 under the Law of Associations of 1901 and established in Morocco as an international NGO. Our associates had previously worked together in the Maghreb since 2000 under another INGO framework.

Our multinational team and Advisory Board consists of Moroccan, European, and American activists, lawyers, professors and non-profit specialists working on human and women’s rights.
